Many people in China have been waiting impatiently for Beijing to start coordinating its strict virus protection measures with the rest of the globe, which has largely opened up in an effort to cope with the pandemic, for three years now.
The largest demonstration of popular discontent since President Xi Jinping took office in 2012 occurred last month as a result of these grievances boiling over into large-scale protests.
Some cities and regions started easing COVID limitations, without explicitly stating that it was in response to those protests, ushering in a general relaxation of the regulations outlined by the National Health Commission on Wednesday.
Infected individuals with minor symptoms can now stay in quarantine at home, according to the NHC.
