Iraqi prime minister survives assassination attempt with drones

In a shocking turn of events, the Prime Minister of Iraq survived an assassination bid in Baghdad today. The attempted coup was thwarted by a drone that intercepted and downed the bomb-laden vehicle approaching his convoy. This is not the first time drones have been used to assassinate high profile officials, but it is certainly one of the most successful attempts to date. It raises the question of who was behind the assassination attempt.

At this time it’s unknown whether or not North Korea was involved in the failed assassination. The coup comes just two months after Iraqi forces pushed out of Mosul, however, experts say that this action is likely unrelated to that push and instead is intended to destabilize Iraq for economic reasons.

This comes just days after the United Nations Security Council unanimously voted to impose further sanctions on North Korea in response to their ballistic missile tests. While not explicitly stated, it is assumed that this is the reason behind the assassination attempt.

There has yet to be any official statement from Pyongyang regarding today’s events, but if more information becomes available this article will be updated.

The Prime Minister and the other officials in his convoy survived the attack, but three civilians were killed in the attack. The drone responsible for preventing the assassination was reportedly an American MQ-9 Reaper.
